Requesting a Non-Academic Accommodation

In addition to Academic Accommodations, The Â鶹´«Ã½ is committed to providing reasonable Non-Academic Accommodations when the accommodations are necessary to afford people with disabilities an equal opportunity to access services, activities, and benefits available to its students, in compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA).

Requests for Non-Academic Accommodations are reviewed on an individualized, case-by-case basis. The Office of Equity and Diversity (OED) is responsible for evaluating whether a student is eligible for a Non-Academic Accommodation. This evaluation may include an interactive process by which the University and student who is requesting an accommodation, work together to assess whether a disability can be reasonably accommodated. Non-Academic Accommodations include housing, support animals, parking, dietary, evacuation plan, pregnancy and parenting, and religious. Academic accommodations are handled by the Office of Student Support & Success.

Requests for Non-Academic Accommodation(s) must be submitted with appropriate documentation through the Accommodate system.  If this is the first time using Accommodate, please follow the process outlined in the guide to complete the intake form. Since accommodations must be requested every year, returning users must follow the steps outlined in this guide to submit updated documentation.

What Happens Next?

Once you have submitted your medical documentation and request for a Non-Academic Accommodation through Accommodate, OED will review your documentation based on the information you provided and the applicable law to determine your eligibility for a Non-Academic Accommodation(s). If additional information is needed, an OED staff member will contact you via email and identify the additional information necessary to process your request. A decision cannot be rendered until all requested information is provided. If the requested information is not provided, the accommodation request will be denied pending receipt of all required documentation. Please check your Â鶹´«Ã½ email account frequently for any communications. It is important to understand that accommodations are not granted retroactively, so timely submission of both your request for a Non-Academic Accommodation and all required documentation are critical steps in the process.

If you have any questions about the status of your documentation process or the status of your request for accommodations, please email non-academic-accom@scranton.edu, or call us at 570–941–6645. If you request a member of OED to speak to your parent(s), legal guardian(s), or health care provider, it is necessary for you to provide written consent.  You will be asked to fill out a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Consent (FERPA) which can be accessed in Accommodate.
